This week’s 10-minute presentation at BNSL was delivered by Murray Kemp of Clement Safety Ltd, who gave the group an engaging and personal insight into his journey towards becoming a Health & Safety specialist.
Murray’s presentation focused not only on his business and qualifications, but also on the experiences and motivations that shaped his career over the years.
Family as the Motivation
One of the strongest themes throughout Murray’s presentation was the importance of family.
Murray explained that family has always been a major driving force behind the decisions he has made throughout his career and life, helping shape the values and approach he now brings into his business.
It gave the presentation a very personal and genuine feel that resonated strongly with the room.
Starting Out in the RAF
Murray began his working life as a Weapons Engineer in the Royal Air Force, serving for eight years.
During his time in the RAF, Murray worked on advanced military equipment including Phantom aircraft and laser-guided weapon systems, gaining valuable experience in:
- Precision
- Safety procedures
- Technical systems
- Responsibility and accountability
These early experiences laid important foundations for the career path he would later follow.
Working in the Care Sector
After leaving the RAF, Murray moved into the care sector, working with young people in detention centres across the UK and later in Abu Dhabi.
This work gave him extensive experience working in high-pressure environments where safeguarding, safety procedures and risk management were critically important.
Murray later worked for The Disabilities Trust, focusing on Health & Safety responsibilities before eventually moving into the commercial side of the industry with Peninsula, where he sold Health & Safety support packages to businesses.
Building Clement Safety Ltd
All of these experiences ultimately led to the launch of Clement Safety Ltd, Murray’s own Health & Safety consultancy business.
Today, Murray provides a range of professional Health & Safety services including:
- Health & Safety Audits
- Fire Risk Assessments
- IOSH Managing Safely Training
- CPD Accredited Training
- General Health & Safety Help & Advice
His work is particularly focused around:
- Children’s homes
- Care homes
- Support organisations
- SMEs requiring practical H&S support

Murray also shared examples of organisations he works with, demonstrating the breadth and quality of his client base.
These included:
- The Wigley Group
- Aspire in Arts
- Aspire & Thrive
- Starplan
- John F White Ltd
It was clear that Murray’s practical, approachable style has helped him build strong relationships across multiple sectors.
Murray’s Pet Hate…
Every Health & Safety professional probably has one thing that particularly irritates them — and for Murray, it’s badly used wet floor signs!
This light-hearted moment brought plenty of laughs from the room and added a bit of humour to what was otherwise a very informative presentation.
A Brilliant Presentation
Murray’s presentation was honest, engaging and full of experience from multiple industries.
It was particularly interesting hearing how his background in the RAF, care sector and corporate Health & Safety all combined to create the business he runs today.
The presentation also highlighted how important practical, realistic Health & Safety advice is — particularly in environments involving vulnerable people and high levels of responsibility.
