This week’s 10-minute presentation at BNSL was delivered by Eddie Royce of True Potential Wealth Management, who gave members an insightful presentation on one of the most important—but often overlooked—topics for business owners: building personal wealth whilst building a successful business.
Eddie explained that whilst many entrepreneurs spend years growing profitable businesses, they often neglect their own long-term financial security.
His key message was simple:
“Your business should create your wealth, not become your only wealth.”
The Business Owner’s Financial Blind Spot
Eddie highlighted a common issue faced by many business owners.
Unlike employees, who often build pension savings automatically through workplace schemes, business owners frequently reinvest profits back into their companies.
Whilst this can help a business grow, it can also leave owners with over 90% of their wealth tied up in their business, with very little invested elsewhere.
This creates unnecessary financial risk.
Eddie posed a thought-provoking question to the group:
“If someone offered you today’s market value for your business, would it provide enough income for the lifestyle you want for the rest of your life?”
It was a question that certainly got everyone thinking.
The Three Pots of Wealth
Eddie explained that financially successful business owners typically build wealth across three key areas:
- Business Value – growing the value of the business itself.
- Personal Investments – building assets outside the business to create financial independence.
- Pension Assets – making use of tax-efficient retirement savings.
By spreading wealth across these three “pots”, business owners can enjoy greater financial security, flexibility and peace of mind.
Common Mistakes Business Owners Make
Eddie also discussed several common financial mistakes that many business owners make, including:
- Assuming the business will always be saleable.
- Keeping too much cash inside the company.
- Not making full use of pension allowances.
- Failing to develop an exit or succession strategy.
- Not protecting the business against the illness or death of a key individual.
He explained that whilst these issues may seem small today, they can create significant financial problems in the future if left unaddressed.
Planning for the Future
The final part of Eddie’s presentation focused on practical action points that every business owner should consider.
These included asking questions such as:
- What is my business worth today?
- How much personal wealth have I built outside my business?
- Am I taking advantage of available tax-efficient planning opportunities?
- Do I have an exit strategy or succession plan?
- Is my family financially protected if the unexpected happens?
Eddie emphasised that taking action early gives business owners far more choice when it comes to retirement, succession planning and financial independence.
He also explained how he helps clients extract profits from their businesses in a tax-efficient manner whilst building personal wealth for the future.
