At our latest Business Networking South Leicestershire meeting, Clement Safety Ltd put members through their paces with an entertaining and educational 15-question quiz covering workplace health and safety, fire prevention, legal responsibilities and a few more personal questions about the business.
The presentation was a great reminder that health and safety isn’t simply about ticking boxes or completing paperwork. It’s about protecting people, understanding risks and ensuring businesses have the right procedures in place.
And judging by some of the questions, there’s always something new to learn!

How Good Is Your Health & Safety Knowledge?
The quiz began with a question that every business owner should probably know:
In what year was the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act introduced?
The answer, of course, is 1974.
Members were then challenged on a range of topics, including when businesses need documented health and safety arrangements, common workplace hazards and the principles behind effective health and safety management.
One particularly important topic was the Plan, Do, Check, Act approach.
This is a recognised framework for managing workplace health and safety, encouraging businesses to plan their procedures, implement them, check their effectiveness and make improvements where necessary.
It’s a reminder that managing safety is an ongoing process rather than something completed once and forgotten about.
Understanding Your Responsibilities as an Employer
One of the quiz questions explored when employers need to document their health and safety arrangements.
Businesses with five or more employees are generally required to record their significant risk assessment findings and have a written health and safety policy.
However, an important point is that health and safety responsibilities don’t suddenly begin when a business employs its fifth person.
Even very small businesses have legal responsibilities to assess and manage relevant risks.
For many SME owners, understanding exactly what is required can be challenging, particularly when legislation and guidance vary depending on the type of work being undertaken.
This is where professional advice from a health and safety consultant can be particularly valuable.
Fire Safety – Do You Know the Basics?
Several questions focused on fire safety, testing members’ knowledge of subjects including:
- The three elements of the fire triangle
- The meaning of PEEP
- The correct colour of fire exit signs
- Choosing appropriate fire extinguishers
- Safe charging locations for electric bicycles and scooters
The fire triangle question was a good reminder that fire requires three essential elements: heat, fuel and oxygen.
Understanding these principles is fundamental to fire prevention.
Another question asked what PEEP stands for.
The answer is Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan, an individual plan designed to help ensure that someone who may need assistance can evacuate safely during an emergency.
These are important considerations for employers, particularly where staff members, visitors or other building users may require additional assistance.
The Growing Importance of Lithium Battery Safety
One particularly topical question concerned the safest place to charge an electric bicycle or scooter.
With increasing numbers of people using electric bikes and scooters, lithium-ion battery safety has become an important consideration for both businesses and households.
The quiz highlighted the importance of choosing suitable charging locations and, critically, keeping escape routes clear.
Damaged batteries, unsuitable chargers and inappropriate charging arrangements can all increase the risk of fire.
Businesses should therefore consider battery charging within their wider fire risk assessments and ensure appropriate precautions are in place.
Getting to Know Clement Safety Ltd
Of course, this wouldn’t be a BNSL quiz without a few questions designed to discover how much members know about the people behind the business!
Members were asked about the origins of the Clement Safety name, professional memberships and the examining body associated with the company’s work.
There was even a question about the name of Cobain’s band!
These questions provided a welcome change from the more technical subjects and helped remind everyone that one of the benefits of BNSL is getting to know the individuals behind the businesses we recommend.
What Services Does Clement Safety Provide?
The quiz also highlighted the broad range of professional services available through Clement Safety Ltd.

Health & Safety Training – More Than a Certificate
Another section of the quiz explored the training courses available through Clement Safety Ltd.
These include:
- Health & Safety Awareness
- Working at Height
- Manual Handling
- Fire Warden Training
- IOSH Managing Safely
- IOSH Safety, Health and Environment for Construction Workers
Appropriate training helps employees recognise hazards, understand safe working practices and respond correctly when something goes wrong.
For employers, investing in training can also help reduce workplace accidents, disruption and avoidable costs.
Most importantly, it helps create a workplace where safety is understood and taken seriously by everyone.
Why Professional Health & Safety Advice Matters
For many small business owners, health and safety can feel like another complicated administrative responsibility.
However, the consequences of getting things wrong can be significant.
Accidents, injuries, enforcement action, business disruption and reputational damage can all result from inadequate safety arrangements.
Professional support can help businesses understand their obligations, identify potential hazards and introduce practical measures to reduce risk.
The aim isn’t to create unnecessary paperwork. It’s to establish sensible, proportionate arrangements that protect employees, customers and visitors.
