This week’s 10-minute presentation at BNSL was delivered by Tony Harding of Tony Harding Garden Design, who gave the group an inspiring and informative presentation exploring how garden spaces evolve over time.
Using real-life examples from projects he has worked on, Tony demonstrated how gardens can be completely transformed through thoughtful planning, structure, planting and long-term vision.
Transforming a Historic Walled Garden
The first project Tony shared involved a garden attached to a Grade I listed building.
Although the property itself was beautiful, the garden had become heavily overgrown and neglected, covered in brambles and ivy. The site included a large quarter-acre walled garden that had lost both its structure and purpose over time.
Tony explained how his team carefully cleared the site, pruned and restored trees, and began reshaping the space into a productive and visually attractive garden once again.
One particularly creative transformation involved converting an unattractive carport area into an outdoor living space featuring:
- Seating areas
- A patio space
- Raised beds
The remaining areas of the garden were thoughtfully zoned into lawned sections and planting beds, bringing both beauty and functionality back into the space.
The end result was a stunning restoration that balanced the historic nature of the property with modern outdoor living.
Building Character Into a New Build Garden
The second example Tony discussed was almost the complete opposite — a newly built property where the garden initially consisted of little more than plain lawn and lacked any real features or structure.
Tony explained how the garden was gradually developed over a number of years to add:
- Depth
- Interest
- Texture
- Seasonal planting
- Visual flow
Curved pathways and expanded planting borders were introduced to soften the space and break up the large lawned areas.
Tony also added protective fencing around newly planted hedging while the garden matured.
The final design created a garden with significantly more character and visual interest, proving that even relatively blank outdoor spaces can evolve into beautiful and welcoming environments over time.
Experience & Award-Winning Expertise
Throughout the presentation, Tony’s passion and experience in garden design were clear to see.
Members also learned that Tony has been awarded an RHS Gold Medal, reflecting the high standards and expertise he brings to every project.
The presentation was an excellent reminder that great gardens are rarely created instantly — they evolve carefully over time through thoughtful design, planning and ongoing development.
